The Oncology Aftercare Program of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre is very excited to present the 4th Ottawa S.H.A.R.E. Conference – “HRQL?? Depuzzling Health-Related Quality of Life” starring the cast of the inspirational documentary “Wrong Way to Hope.” (www.wrongwaytohope.com). This amazing group of Canadian childhood and young adult cancer survivors ventured down the whitewaters of the Owyhee Canyon river to overcome their fears, discuss their cancer experience and celebrate their cancer survivorship – all while tackling rapids and mountains.

The cast will be joined by a few of Ottawa’s own successful cancer survivors including a mountain climber who has conquered Mt. Kilimanjaro, a Paralympics snowboarder and a Tip-of-the-toes Adventurist. Each of these wonderful individuals demonstrates in very a real way how to achieve a good, positive and healthy quality of life as a cancer survivor, our conference theme for 2011. We are very grateful that Dr. Anne Klassen, an Associate Professor from McMaster University and international expert in health-related quality of life (HRQL) will speak at the conference to explain to survivors, families, friends, supporters and community partners to de-puzzle what ‘HRQL’ is in a practical and thought-proving way. All conference guest speakers will inspire, motivate and support you as you search out your own healthy lifestyle, successes and adventures.

This one day educational conference targets an audience of both childhood and young adult cancer survivors, their family members and supporters, healthcare and community professionals from a wide geographical population spanning all of Ontario, Western Quebec and across Canada. The conference, held in the heart of downtown Ottawa is open to anyone (over the age of 16) who is interested in learning more about successful cancer survivorship and health-related quality of life. The conference will consist of a morning session of educational and motivational presentations and after being treated to a social luncheon you will attend two of your chosen workshops in the afternoon from topics including living beyond the fear of cancer, relationships, isolation, do-it-yourself adventures, transitioning into successful survivorship and reintrajectorization (huh? we know, you’ll have to attend to find out!).

But wait, that’s not all…..new to our conference this year is an exciting and much wanted Social Event!!! Check out the link above and join your friends and peers at the Saturday evening Social Event for a night of networking fun, laughter and good times. We know the 2011 SHARE conference will motivate childhood cancer survivors to be proactive in self-education and self-management, recognize what a healthy quality of life can be and seek out an adventure of their own!

On behalf of the conference planning committee We look forward to reconnecting with friends and meeting new cancer survivors and their supporters as we celebrate Cancer Survivorship together!
